3 mountain climbers, members of our Everest expedition, rescued in Kamchatka

As of Tuesday rescuers have managed to save all three mountain climbers who were lost from their group while descending the Kamen Mountain in the Kamchatka region on Sunday.

Nine mountain climbers from Primorye, Moscow and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky were descending from Kamchatka’s Kamen Mountain as part of their professional training when three members of their ascent team disappeared due to poor visibility at a height of 2.4 kilometers.

Two of the missing climbers were found Tuesday morning, Ria Novosti said citing Anatoly Plevako, Head of Kamchatka’s Department for Emergency Situations. The third climber, a Vladivostok resident who had sent a distress signal on Monday saying he was at a height of 1.1 kilometers, was found and rescued by a Mi-8 helicopter a few hours later. The conditions of the rescued men are reported as satisfactory.

The climbers will be taken by helicopter to the village of Klyuchi located 30 kilometers from the Kamen Mountain.

The Prosecutor’s Office of the Ust-Kamchatsky region has begun an investigation into the incident aiming to determine the exact circumstances and parties in charge of the climbers’ safety.
