General information: A group of Russian alpinists who have become the latest ambassadors will soon embark on an expedition to scale the world`s highest mountain peaks in five continents, bringing along Sochi 2014`s flag in a show of support for the bid`s efforts to bring the Winter Games to Russia for the first time ever.

Sochi 2014 bid CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko and Russian Olympic Committee President Leonid Tyagachev this weekend handed the Sochi 2014 flag over to Maxim Shakirov, the head of the alpinist group due to take off on the around-the-world expedition, which is expected to return to Russia in July of this year.

Mr. Shakirov said:

"As we attempt to scale the highest mountains across five continents over the final months of the Sochi 2014 campaign, we are confident that Sochi`s bid will also reach new heights of excellence and demonstrate to the world the ability of our nation to host a spectacular winter sport celebration. We share with other Russian athletes the hope that in 2014 the flags of the world will come to Sochi for a once-in-a-lifetime, unforgettable Winter Games. In the meantime, as a symbol of our faith in the success of Sochi 2014, we look forward to raising Sochi`s flag atop the tallest peaks of the world."

Mr. Tyagachev also commented:

"It is symbolic that the Sochi 2014 flag will be flying on the highest peaks of the five continents of the planet before the 119th IOC session in Guatemala. We are proud to be a part of this ambitious mission and I believe this around-the-globe trip will anticipate Russia`s bid success."

The planned expedition will run from January 30th till February 18th, 2007. Aconcagua mountain (6,962 m) in South America will be the first to welcome the Sochi 2014 flag. Later the flag will travel to the top of Europe`s Elbrus mountain (5,642 m), Australia`s Kosciuszko Mountain (2,228 m) and Africa`s Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), before finally reaching the world`s tallest peak, Mount Everest (8,848 m) in Asia.
