Jan. 28 (Bloomberg) -- A 71-year-old Japanese man climbed Mount Vinson Massif, the highest mountain in Antarctica, becoming the oldest person to scale the tallest peaks in the world`s seven continents, Kyodo News reported.

Tomiyasu Ishikawa, the head of a mountaineering association in Aichi prefecture west of Tokyo, reached Vinson Massif peak on Jan. 21, Kyodo said, citing his family.

Ishikawa beat the record set by Spanish climber Ramon Blanco, who was 70 years and eight months, the report said, without saying where it obtained the information or when Blanco completed the feat.

Vinson Massif is 4,897 meters (16,067 feet) high and is located at 79 degrees, 50 minutes south and 84 degrees, 17 minutes west, according to the Times Atlas of London. Antarctica has the highest average elevation of all the continents, according to 7summits.com.
