Which is more suitable: 3 by 20 or 2 by 30? The man seems to be in the prime of his physical and intellectual powers. That means two by thirty. On the other hand, there is youthful enthusiasm, lightness and indefatigability on the face. How can all this be combined with the number 60? Yes, it's just a start to new records, to the title of "most-most" in another "weight" category. We wish our captain new victories, ideas, desires and opportunities! Good luck, heavenly mercy, weather on request, happiness in all respects!

Andrey Muravyov, a participant in several of our programs, sent us a message from far away Australia. There, by climbing Kosciuszko Mountain, he successfully completed the "Seven Summits" program, climbing all the highest summits of all continents. The 7 Summits Club cordially congratulates Andrey and wishes him good luck in achieving new goals!  For example, why not complete the "Seven Volcanoes" as well?  Or add some eightthousander? Andrey is an entrepreneur and traveler, a native and pupil of Buryatia, who now lives in Moscow. We hope that his career as a "collector of summits" will continue with the participation of our company.

 Andrey Muravyov from Australia:

Yes, I decided not to delay and finish the project "Seven Summits - Seven Continents" this year. Mount Kosciuszko, the highest point of the continent of Australia, is located here.

And even though the Mountain is the most technically simple and not high (2228 m) of the entire "star seven", now it is very difficult to just get here, taking into account the circumstances. I climbed the first peak of Kilimanjaro in Africa in 2017.

Accordingly, seven summits of all continents of the world have been reached in seven years; it seems to me that this will be a good result.

Congratulations on the International Mountain Day! Friends, love adventures, give yourself vivid emotions, love nature, go to the mountains! And let's do everything to preserve the beauty of the mountains for us and for our descendants!

We keep calling you to the mountains! The 7 Summits Club is always ready to help you organize mountain trips around the world. Follow the updates of our programs.  Mountains should give us the happiest moments of our lives, and giving people happiness is our mission!

If possible, leave the mountains clean after you!  And in general, do everything possible to keep the mountains a territory of freedom, a territory where you can meet with pristine nature, a place of joyful meeting with friends, a place you want to return to, where you want to bring children, where everyone will be happy!

The International Mountain Day on December 11 was established by decision of the UN General Assembly in January 2003.  Every year, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at the United Nations, responsible for this holiday, determines the themes of the year.

International Mountain Day 2023

Restoring mountain ecosystems is the theme of this year's International Mountain Day on 11 December.

This theme was selected to fully include mountains in the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030, co-led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and the UN Environment Programme. The Decade is an opportunity to draw together political support, scientific research and financial resources to significantly scale-up restoration and prevent further degradation of mountain ecosystems.

Mountains cover around 27 percent of the Earth's land surface and host about half of the world's biodiversity hotspots. As the water towers of the world, they supply freshwater to an estimated half of humanity. Mountains are home to an extraordinary range of plants and animals, and to many culturally diverse communities with different languages and traditions. From climate regulation and water provisioning services, to soil maintenance and conservation, mountains are key to our lives and livelihoods.

Yet mountains are suffering from the impacts of climate change and unsustainable development, escalating risks for people and the planet. Climate change threatens the flow of water, and fast-rising temperatures are forcing mountain species and the people that depend on these ecosystems to adapt or migrate. Steep slopes mean the clearing of forest for farming, settlements or infrastructure can cause soil erosion as well as the loss of habitat. Erosion and pollution harm the quality of water flowing downstream. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, up to 84 percent of endemic mountain species are at risk of extinction, while populations of a range of other montane plant and animal species are projected to decline and face extinction.

The recent biodiversity agreement of the 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference – which pledges to protect 30 percent of the Earth's lands, oceans, coastal areas and inland waters by 2030 – provides an impetus to revive and protect mountain landscapes.

The UN General Assembly also recently proclaimed 2023–2027 "Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions" in its triennial resolution on sustainable mountain development. Its objectives are to attract grant assistance and investments for mountains, develop "green" economies and technologies, create mechanisms to strengthen cooperation between mountainous countries, and develop science and education in the field of sustainable mountain development.

International Mountain Day 2023 is a chance to increase awareness about the relevance of mountain ecosystems and call for nature-based solutions, best practices and investments that build resilience, reduce vulnerability and increase the ability of mountains to adapt to daily threats and extreme climatic events.

In the coming months, we will prepare communication materials in all six UN languages, which will be available here.

While "Restoring mountain ecosystems" is the suggested theme for 2023, countries, communities and organizations are welcome to celebrate IMD through a theme that is more relevant to them.

Women move mountains

The theme of this year's International Mountain Day (IMD) on 11 December will be Women move mountains.

Women play a key role in mountains' environmental protection and social and economic development. They are often the primary managers of mountain resources, guardians of biodiversity, keepers of traditional knowledge, custodians of local culture, and experts in traditional medicine.

Increasing climate variability, coupled with a lack of investment in mountain agriculture and rural development, has often pushed men to migrate elsewhere in search of alternative livelihoods. Women have therefore taken on many tasks formerly done by men, yet mountain women are often invisible due to a lack of decision-making power and unequal access to resources.

As farmers, market sellers, businesswomen, artisans, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, mountain women and girls, in particular in rural areas, have the potential to be major agents of change. When rural women have access to resources, services, and opportunities, they become a driving force against hunger, malnutrition, and rural poverty and are active in the development of mountain economies.

International Mountain Day 2022 is an opportunity to promote gender equality and therefore contribute to improving social justice, livelihoods and resilience.

Get to know more about women in mountains and use FAO's, communication materials in all six UN languages, which are available on their website.

While Women move mountains is the suggested theme for 2022, countries, communities, and organizations are welcome to celebrate IMD through a theme that is more relevant to them.

Celebrate this International Day 2022 with your community and friends preparing an event or joining the conversation on social media using the hashtag #MountainsMatter. Pass on some of the key messages, or share about the important role of women in mountains, or post, or a photo of your favorite mountain.

Natural jewels we should treasure

Mountains are home to 15% of the world´s population and host about half of the world's biodiversity hotspots. They provide freshwater for everyday life to half of humanity. Their conservation is a key factor for sustainable development and is part of Goal 15 of the SDGs.

Unfortunately, mountains are under threat from climate change and overexploitation. As the global climate continues to warm, mountain people — some of the world’s poorest — face even greater struggles to survive. The rising temperatures also mean that mountain glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, affecting freshwater supplies downstream for millions of people.

This problem affects us all. We must reduce our carbon footprint and take care of these natural treasures.

The increasing attention to the importance of mountains led the UN to declare to 2002 the UN International Year of Mountains. The first international day was celebrated for the first time the following year, 2003.

Its roots date back to 1992, when the document “Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development” (called Chapter 13), was adopted as part of the action plan Agenda 21 of the Conference on Environment and Development.

Most recently, the UN proclaimed 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development

Sustainable mountain tourism

The theme of this year's International Mountain Day (IMD) on 11 December will be sustainable mountain tourism.

Sustainable tourism in mountains can contribute to creating additional and alternative livelihood options and promoting poverty alleviation, social inclusion, as well as landscape and biodiversity conservation. It is a way to preserve the natural, cultural and spiritual heritage, to promote local crafts and high value products, and celebrate many traditional practices such as local festivals.

Mountain tourism attracts around 15 to 20 percent of global tourism. Tourism, however, is one of the sectors most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, affecting economies, livelihoods, public services and opportunities on all continents. In mountains, the restrictions of the pandemic have further compounded the vulnerabilities of mountain communities.

This crisis can be seen as an opportunity to rethink mountain tourism and its impact on natural resources and livelihoods, to manage it better, and to harness it towards a more resilient, green and inclusive future.

In the coming months, FAO, leading UN agency for this International Day, will prepare communication materials in all six UN languages, which will be available on their website. Hard copies will be available upon request.

While sustainable mountain tourism is the suggested theme for 2021, countries, communities and organizations are welcome to celebrate IMD through a theme that is more relevant to them.

Celebrate this International Day 2021 with your community and friends preparing an event or joining the conversation on social media using the hashtag #MountainsMatter. Happy New Year! We wish you good health and new summits! Let join us!

In 2020, the 7 Summits Club entered at full speed, in the usual rhythm and in full confidence in our strength. During the New Year period of 19/20, our groups traveled all over the world, mainly in the Southern Hemisphere. All our programs were successful, members of ascents and hikes returned home happy.

Then the madness came, and quarantine crept up on us. But we did not lose heart and conducted online training sessions that helped us prepare in the summer!

We managed to get a full season on Elbrus, in the summer every week groups of the 7 Summits Club climbed the summit. And this summer there lasted until mid-October! We have rediscovered Ararat! Tanzania with Kilimanjaro in general was the only country completely safe from COVID, and we returned to Africa when returned flights! Now South America has opened a little, Ecuador, Mexico and Chile are hosting guests. And our groups already climbed local summits…

Celebrating the New Year, we wish all mankind to defeat the evil infection! And thanks for the lessons of the outgoing year! We began to more appreciate freedom, we realized that we could not live without traveling and climbing!

Everest, Denali, Antarctica, Aconcagua and other mountains – how lonely its were without us this year! How its are waiting for us!

Sincerely yours, the 7 Summits Club.

020 Theme: Mountain biodiversity

Mountain biodiversity is the theme of this year’s International Mountain Day, so let's celebrate their rich biodiversity, as well as address the threats they face.

Mountains loom large in some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes. Their unique topography, compressed climatic zones and isolation have created the conditions for a wide spectrum of life forms.

Biodiversity encompasses the variety of ecosystems, species and genetic resources, and mountains have many endemic varieties. The differentiated topography in terms of altitude, slope and exposure in mountains offers opportunities to grow a variety of high-value crops, horticulture, livestock and forest species.

For example, mountain pastoralists in Pakistan have a highly treasured livestock genetic resource pool with special traits bred into animals, such as disease resilience, which can help adaption to changing climate. Nearly 70% of mountain land is used for grazing and provides manure that enhances soil fertility. Livestock not only produces food items such as milk, butter and meat, but also valuable by-products, such as some of the most precious yarns, like cashmere wool.

However, climate change, unsustainable farming practices, commercial mining, logging, and poaching all exact a heavy toll on mountain biodiversity. In addition, land use and land cover change, and natural disasters, accelerate biodiversity loss and contribute to creating a fragile environment for mountain communities. Ecosystem degradation, loss of livelihoods and migration in mountains can lead to the abandonment of cultural practices and ancient traditions that have sustained biodiversity for generations.

The sustainable management of mountain biodiversity has been increasingly recognized as a global priority. Sustainable Development Goal 15, target four, is dedicated to the conservation of mountains’ biodiversity in consideration of its global relevance. Biodiversity in all ecosystems is in focus, as the United Nations has declared 2021 to 2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and governments prepare to negotiate the post-2020 global biodiversity framework for adoption this year at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Celebrate this International Day 2020 with your community and friends preparing an event or joining the conversation on social media using the hashtag #MountainsMatter. Pass on some of the key messages, or share about the biodiversity in the mountains near you, or a photo of your favorite mountain.

The Birthday celebration of the 7 summits Club took place yesterday in Yalta. Despite the morning rain, more than 25 people took part in the mass climbing of via-ferrata on Ilyas Kaya. All the members were happy and filled with emotions. In the evening, we had a holiday party on the seaside beach of Yalta - with toasts, socializing and even swimming in the sea. By the way, the sea is now warm, the water temperature is 20 degrees!  Everyone liked the new format of our celebration. We will act in a similar way in the future.

Suffice it to mention that he is the Chairman of the Council of the Union of Russian Brewers! So the rapid blitz ascent on Elbrus ended with the following scene of taking snow from the top to prepare a new variety of beer:

The 7 Summits Club congratulates all mountain lovers!

The mountains have made our lives richer, we are responsible for what mountains will be for future generations.

‘Mountains matter for Youth’ - The motto of International Mountain Day in 2019.

International Mountain Day 2019

‘Mountains matter for Youth’ is the theme of this year’s International Mountain Day, which is celebrated on 11 December.

Young people are active agents of change and the future leaders of tomorrow. They are custodians of mountains and of their natural resources, which are being threatened by climate change.

The 2019 International Mountain Day’s theme is a great opportunity for young generations to take the lead and request that mountains and mountain peoples become central in the national and international development agendas, receive more attention, investments and tailored research.

The day will also be an occasion to educate children about the role that mountains play in supporting billions up and downstream – by providing freshwater, clean energy, food and recreation.

International Mountain Day is a chance to highlight that for rural youth, living in the mountains can be hard. Many young people leave in search of a better life and employment. Migration from mountains leads to abandoned agriculture, land degradation and a loss of cultural values and ancient traditions.  Education and training, market access, diverse employment opportunities and good public services can ensure a brighter future for young people in the mountains.

In the coming months, a communication tool box for International Mountain Day will be made available on the IMD website in six languages.

While ‘Mountains matter for Youth’ is the suggested theme for 2019, countries, communities and organizations are welcome to celebrate International Mountain Day through themes of their choosing. What can you do?

What can you do?

  • Raise awareness of mountains on 11 December by organizing youth forums, hands-on activities, presentations, student debates, photo and art competitions, hikes and events targeted to specific age groups.
