ORIZABA, MEXIC, MAY 6, 2016 - On Tuesday May 5th, at 11.40 a.m. local hour, Romanian mountaineer Dor Geta Popescu reached the highest volcano peak in North America, the Pico de Orizaba. For Geta this is the fifth success of the Volcanic Seven Summits, the highest volcanoes on each of the seven continents.
“1300 m level difference climbed in less than 5 hours, a steep trail switching from rocky alpine valley to the shore with eroded rock from the recently retired glacier. After crossing the glacier which surrounds the volcanic cone, I went on the crest of the crater. Everything was achieved rapidly on a demanding nevertheless beautiful trail, which culminated with reaching the peak and taking in the gorgeous panorama in front of me. High altitude bliss!” - said Geta.
Dor Geta Popescu is a member of the performance group Altitude Mountaineering Sports Club. She obtained her first exceptional result for 2016 on the 6th of February by reaching the top of Mount Aconcagua (6960 meters/ 22,838 feet), thus becoming the world's youngest female mountaineer to reach this top. By reaching the Mexican peak, Dor Geta Popescu didn’t stop here – her ambition and strength prove yet another time that she is an exceptional sportswoman.
Dor Geta Popescu’s next goal of the "North America - 2016" expedition is to climb the giant of North America – Mount Denali, located in the Alaska Range, 345 km south of the Arctic Circle. The mountain's peak is 20,310 feet (6,190 meters) above sea level, making it the third highest of the Seven Summits — the highest mountains on each of the seven continents — following Mount Everest in Nepal and Aconcagua in Argentina.
