TALKEETNA, ALASKA, MAY 24th, 2016 – On Wednesday 18th , 12 Year-Old Romanian mountaineer Dor Geta Popescu succeeded in reaching Denali summit, the giant of North America.
The achievement of Dor Geta Popescu, the sportswoman of the Romanian Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing, matches the world record set by Merrick Johnston, the American who in 1995, also at the age of 12, became the youngest female to reach the top of Mount Denali.
“Yes, I am extremely happy, higher and higher yet again! It is a world record for which I worked diligently, practicing beforehand and by sustained effort during the climb. It is an achievement I have always dreamed of and for which I would have been ready to stay on the mountain for 30 days which is the maximum one can stretch to in those extreme weather conditions. But I didn’t have to do that! Everything went as planned, I felt extraordinary, I persuaded and kept concentrating. I reached the peak in 7 days of effort and hard work, dragging a 20 kg full of equipment sled up the mountain, building shelter walls to protect the tent, going up and down to get acclimatized, 7 days full of emotions! And at the very end – the utter happiness of succeeding”! – said Geta.
Since age 10, Dor Geta Popescu has been representing Romania in expeditions on high mountains as a member of the Altitude Expeditions Team. She is also part of the Altitude Mountaineering Sports Club within which she continued the outstanding racing of the 2016 season. In February 2016 she set a world record for her age group by reaching Aconcagua Peak - the highest mountain in the Western hemisphere. After that, Dor Geta Popescu set two other world records in less than one month – on May 5th, Pico de Orizaba, 5636 m, the highest volcano in North America and on May 18h, Denali, 6190 m, the highest mountain in North America
